Investigative journalism is not opinion. It is a process. Here is ours, applied to every story we publish without exception.
Source Intake
We receive a tip, assess its credibility, and establish a secure communication channel before any further information changes hands. No source detail is logged or stored.
Document Gathering
We file freedom of information requests, obtain public records, cross-reference company filings, and verify every primary source document for authenticity before it is used.
Corroboration
Every key claim must be confirmed by at least two independent lines of evidence. A single source, however credible, is never sufficient for publication on its own.
Right of Reply
Subjects are contacted with specific allegations in writing and given adequate time to respond. Their response, or their refusal to respond, is included in the published story.
Legal Review
Every story is reviewed by legal counsel for accuracy and compliance before publication. We do not publish under legal pressure, and we do not unpublish what we can defend.
Publication and Follow-Up
We publish, monitor the institutional and public response, and continue reporting as new evidence emerges. Publication is not the end of the investigation.

Sources who come to Spy are protected by robust operational security practices and our absolute commitment never to identify a source without their explicit consent.
We use encrypted communication channels, we do not store identifying metadata, and we have faced legal pressure to reveal sources and refused. Our record on source protection is absolute.
If you have information you believe needs to be in the public domain, talk to us before you talk to anyone else. We will tell you honestly what we can and cannot protect, and we will work with you to establish the safest possible channel before a single piece of information is exchanged.
Encrypted Channels
All sensitive communications are conducted over end-to-end encrypted platforms. We provide specific channel guidance to every source before any material is shared.
No Metadata Stored
We do not log IP addresses, device fingerprints, or any identifying metadata on tip submissions. What you do not give us, we cannot be compelled to hand over.
Legal Pressure Refused
We have received legal demands to reveal source identities and refused every one. Source confidentiality is not a policy we set aside when it becomes inconvenient.
